MYP Personal Project
What is a Personal Project?
If you had the time and permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do, what would you do? Compose your own music? Write and star in your own film? Restore a motorcycle? Organize a 10K run? Now is your chance! The MYP Personal Project is a significant student-directed inquiry produced over an extended period, completed by all students in the final year of the MYP. It holds an important place in the MYP and reflects the student’s experience in the program. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and creative work of their choice and to demonstrate the skills they have developed through approaches to learning.
By incorporating the skills you have developed through your academic courses, the design cycle and applying the Approaches to Learning (ATL), you will be demonstrating your ability to plan, research, design, create and present something that is truly your own. You will also write a personal project report that shows your connection to your chosen Global Context in your planning, types of research conducted, analysis of research and reflections.
There are countless directions this project can go, such as:
An original work of art (visual, dramatic, performance, etc.)
A written piece on a special topic (literary, social, psychological, historical, etc.)
A piece of literary fiction/non-fiction
An original science experiment
An invention or specially-designed object or system
A presentation of a developed business, management, or organizational plan, such as an entrepreneurial business or project, a special event, or the development of a new student or community organization.
Solve problems through innovation
Defend a position
The aims of the Project are to allow you to:
-engage in personal inquiry on issues that are relevant to you, through an area of interaction as a context for learning
-demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended
period of time,
-reflect on your learning and knowledge (on your own and with others)
-move towards thoughtful and positive action and
-develop confidence as a lifelong learner.
You will be working with a teacher supervisor of your choice from NAHS, but all your MYP teachers and the IB Coordinator are available to help you throughout the process. You will need to choose a supervisor.
The role of the teacher supervisor is to provide guidance in the planning, research and completion of the project and to confirm the authenticity of your work by checking your process journal at regular intervals. Your supervisor will be part of a team that will assess the Project at a presentation in April 2016 according to the criteria provided in the Student Guide.
